I'm Ashamed to Admit This...

...But I need to confess a short-coming I have and seek out your assistance.

The insanely talented author John Green (Paper Towns comes out on October 16) is doing a book tour for said book. There are two stops in my general area: October 18 (Borders on the north side of town) and November 4 (Election Night Extravaganza down in the Indy suburb of Greenwood).

It would be an understatement to say that I'm super stoked about this. What I'm not super stoked about is my lack of knowledge regarding book tours. What does one do at a book tour? I'm going to assume Senor Green is going to do a reading of the book, perhaps a Q&A, and then an autograph/signing line. That's where I get tripped up. I'm one of those weird people who eschews autographs--why do I want people writing on my stuff just because they're famous (to some degree)? I don't like the idea of that... never really have... I'm sure that makes me weird.

However, can one go through a line, wanting the opportunity to meet someone that you admire them for their dedication and creativity, but also tell them you don't want them to write on your stuff? Is that socially acceptable? Would a "creative type," such as an author, appreciate that idiosyncrasy of your personality?

If one does go through the line, sans seeking the autograph, I would assume said person would have to have a pretty awesome question and/or comment to share with the author. What would that be? I am clearly open to suggestions (drop them in the electronic comment box).

Hmm, not sure what to say there. I was at a small event the other day and several people went up just to say hi, or that they had enjoyed the talk. However, there wasn't a huge line so I'm not sure if the dynamic was different.

As a side note, thanks for your comment on my blog. My book club is reading The Glass Castle for our November meeting. I haven't started it yet, but I'll be posting my review before the meeting on Nov. 15. Stop back over and we can compare notes!

Funny! How about asking him to sign a paper you could stick in your book, and share your quirk? (I would bring the book to show that you have it).

I have read author's blogs and they like people to come to the signings, so I think another fan would be cool by them -- autograph or not.

What is this Paper Towns about? He's coming my way soon as well and a few of my friends are really excited...

Those are good ideas... maybe I can find something funny for him to sign (less conventional than a book) that it would make sense for him to write on.

Paper Towns is about the story of a girl who (seemingly) lives a life-less-ordinary and the people who are in her orbit. There is an undercurrent message of whether our perceptions of people are really accurate. Over at the B&N website there is an audio interview with the author (I think he does a brief reading) and then tells the story of how he developed the story... it's really good. The link to that is: http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Paper-Towns/John-Green/e/9780525478188/?itm=1. Scroll down to the "Barnes & Noble Studio" audio box.
