Booking Through Thursdays

Booking Through Thursday is a blog that posts a weekly question regarding books for people around the globe to respond to. (Ignore that dangling participle.)

This week's question is:

"What, in your opinion, is the best book that you haven’t liked?"
The question they're getting at is: What piece of "classic literature" or "modern classic literature" did you read and not like? My answer would be The Illiad and The Odyssey by Homer. This was required reading in a college literature class, and I hated every minute of it.

I'm sure it's good underneath it all, but I found the whole thing to be a big tale of which guy had more balls [I'm going to burn in literary hell for that synopsis, I'm sure]. Anyway, I didn't like reading this, although I do like tales of the gods or tales that are based on mythology. Go figure.

How about you? What book (or books) have you read (or been forced to read) that you just couldn't force yourself to like?

Parts of those are read in 9th and 12th grades too. I have three other titles for my answer. Come see. Happy BTT.

Oh, my, you're definitely burning in literary hill for that one. ;)

I still thought it was funny, though, and gave you "mad props" as I mentioned yours in my own answer.

The Illiad and The Odyssey are books one can read for pleasure. Literary merits don't count.

My BTT post!

Sal, I'm glad I was able to put off the reading until college.

gautami, I'm sure some people can read them for pleasure... just not me.

Surprisingly I actually liked the Illiad and Odessey! Now Moby Dick was an entirely different matter.

I read both in college (for classics minor) and actually enjoyed them. I re-read The Iliad when I started graduate school.

For me Moby Dick is such a dread and The Alchemist is just fluffy crap.

I don't know where literary hill is, but it sounds a lot better than literary hell. :) Oops. Of course, I might you're going to burn in literary hell...and by the way, nice comeback on my blog.

Also read both of those in High School...definitely didn't like them then and probably still wouldn't. Great picks...mine was a children's book; come see

I must say I didn't really like it either, but then again it was in a college course, so my opinion may be different if I didnt have to pick it apart like in class.

I read half of Iliad and half of Odyssey in high school. It was the teacher who set out only half the text - which is a good thing in hindsight. It wasn't daunting and if you were hooked you were free to go on. I liked both but found them difficult.
