This Week's Best Sellers (07/24/2009)

Weekly Feature: Here's a run-down of what's hot at the book stores this week (according to the NY Times lists posted online on 7/17/09, print version 7/24/09):

Hardcover Fiction
1. Black Hills by Nora Roberts ($26.95)
2. Swimsuit by James Patterson and Maxine Paetro ($27.99)
3. Finger Lickin' Fifteen by Janet Evanovich ($27.95)

Trade Paperback Fiction
1. The Shack by William P. Young ($14.99)
2. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson ($14.95)
3. The Guernsey Literary Potato Peel and Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows ($14.00)

Mass Market Paperback Fiction
1. My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult ($7.99)
2. TailSpin by Catherine Coulter ($7.99)
3. Hidden Currents by Christine Feehan ($7.99)

Children's Books (Chapter Books)/Young Adult Fiction
1. L.A. Candy by Lauren Conrad ($17.99)
2. Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen ($19.99)
3. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins ($17.99)

My Thoughts:
  • Congrats to Nora Roberts for knocking James Patterson off his perch after only a week. Things have been really shaking on this portion of the list, lots of good "beach reads" being released and people are snapping them up. I can always get behind people reading books and keeping the wheels of commerce moving.
  • Amongst trade paperback, we've got a new number one and Stieg Larsson re-entered the "medal winners" for the week. He's probably being helped by the post-humous release of the second book in this series, The Girl Who Played With Fire; this comes out in English in hardback next week.
  • Amongst mass market paperback, Picoult is back on top and Catherine Coulter jumped into the fray with her twelfth book in the FBI Thrillers series that came out earlier this month.
  • No real change from last week on the YA list, except for the nonfiction title slipping below third place. But I really don't get it. Lauren Conrad, people? Aren't we buying anything else? You can't blame me, I went to the bookstore on Monday and bought two YA books that were not written by Lauren Conrad. Are you guilty? [Perhaps the most alarming thing, in my opinion, is that there is a planned sequel for L.A. Candy. Lord help us all.]
Your Thoughts: Post in the comments and let me know which of these books you've read, which you plan to, which you are going to avoid like a plague of locusts. Thoughts on the new books on the list?

Hi Heather, I know I already tagged you with an award this week, but I have another one for you, one that I think is much more appropriate. Here.

Thanks, Heather, for visiting my blog earlier today. Unlike you, I'm too lazy to break out my book stuff and life stuff into two blogs.

I've added my mug shot to your Follower's list because I like what you've done with the place.

Happy reading.

I don't read Nora, or James, or Janet. And LC...For realzies???
... But for book club we read the Potato Peel book (as we all called it) and the dragon tattoo book. I liked the Potato Peel book for the most part, did not like the ending. The Girl with a Dragon Tattoo was deeply disturbing, but I did enjoy the murder mystery.

I actually havent read Nora in quite some time but I am curious about a book that as you said, knocked James Patterson off the book shelf top spot.

Swimsuit is not my style of read so had no plans to read that and Evanovich and I parted ways quite some time ago so she can sit in her spot with no applause from me.

I have read the shack and the other two in this category I have not but have read good reviews on both so would certainly be willing to read if they came across my shelves.

I have read My Sisters Keeper a few years ago(my first Picoult read in fact) and really enjoyed it. The other two titles in this category I am not real familiar with.

In the YA category I recently won the Along For The Ride book and received it in the mail this past week. I am interested in reading this to see what all they hype is about this author.

As for Lauren Conrads book... uh.... I dont think so. Hunger games will probably be a pass as well.

Hi Heather, I made a mistake with the award image - I shouldn't have had my URL on there. I recently did a few weekly event images/logos, and had been in the habit of putting addresses on the bottom of them - but awards shouldn't include them, I think. Anyway, I updated the image back on my site at the post to remove the address here.

The Girl with the dragon tattoo is great :) I love Evanovich but have heard that 15 is dire :( I'm about to start My sister's keeper, and LA candy is on my to buy list.

And hi, I'm a newbie blogger *waves*
